ive been shooting with the mavic 3 cine for about a year and honestly the hasselblad sensor is great for most stuff but ive been getting more commercial work lately that requires higher dynamic range and specifically some clients want raw files in a format that plays nicer with their post pipeline. so ive been looking at custom payload setups, mostly thinking about something like a sony a7 series on a proper 3-axis gimbal mounted to a heavy lifter.

the thing im not sure about is whether the stabilization you get from a dedicated gimbal like the gremsy t3 or movi carbon actually beats what you get from a well tuned integrated system. my gut says the mechanical isolation is always going to be better but ive also seen some really clean footage from people just using the built in stuff with good ND stacks and careful flying technique. curious if anyone has actually done both and can give me a real comparison, not just specs

done both extensively and honestly it depends so much on what youre shooting. for slow cinematic stuff where youre doing long glides and gentle movements the integrated systems are genuinely hard to beat because the latency between the fc and gimbal is basically zero and the whole thing is tuned together from the factory. where third party rigs shine is flexibility ? being able to swap lenses mid shoot, controlling iris remotely, getting that specific sensor characteristic that a client is paying for. the gremsy t3 is solid but you will spend time tuning it for each camera body and lens combo, its not plug and play by any stretch.

also weight distribution becomes a whole thing when youre going custom. ive had shoots where i spent 45 minutes just balancing before we could fly and by that point the light had changed. its a real workflow consideration.

the dynamic range argument is real but have you shot the m3 cine in d-log m and properly exposed it? i was suprised how much you can pull out of it in post, not saying its as good as an a7rv obviously but for a lot of commercial work it might be closer than you think and the workflow savings are significant. just something to consider before going down the rabbit hole of custom rigs because trust me that rabbit hole goes deep
