FAA finally updating remote ID rules? saw something about this

  • Members

so i was reading through some drone news this morning and apparently the FAA is looking at tweaking some of the remote ID implementation stuff, something about enforcement timelines and maybe how the broadcast modules work with older aircraft. i honestly couldnt find a super clear source on it, the article i read was kind of vague and kept referencing a comment period that already closed.

anyone else following this? im mainly asking because i have an older Phantom 4 Pro and ive been putting off the whole remote ID thing because the module options for it are kind of janky and expensive relative to what the drone is worth at this point. if theyre actually reconsidering anything i might just wait it out a bit more before spending money on a module.

also heard a rumor that DJI is supposedly working on a firmware approach for some older models but i have no idea if thats real or just wishful thinking on reddit

yeah ive been following the remote ID stuff pretty closely since it actually went into effect. from what i understand the enforcement side has been pretty soft so far, like they havent really been cracking down hard on recreational fliers who dont have modules yet. that said i wouldnt count on it staying that way forever.

the DJI firmware thing ? i heard that too but i think it only applies to certain newer models that already have the hardware capability baked in, not really legacy stuff like the P4P. the broadcast module situation for older drones is genuinely kind of a mess, youre not wrong about that. i ended up just getting one of the Dronetag mini units for my older bird and it works fine but yeah its annoying to spend 80 bucks on something that basically just makes you findable.
