nearly lost my drone in iceland and i still cant believe what happened

ok so this is kind of a cautionary tale. was out near skogafoss last summer, absolutely stunning place, and i had been flying for maybe 10 minutes when the wind just completely changed direction. like out of nowhere. was getting return to home warnings and the thing was fighting hard to get back, i could see it in the fpv feed just getting pushed sideways. ended up landing it manually on a random patch of grass probably 400 meters from where i was standing and then had to hike over to it through these wet rocks in regular sneakers.

the footage was honestly worth it but man i aged like 5 years in those 3 minutes. iceland wind is no joke and i knew that going in but knowing it and experiencing it are two very different things. check your wind forecasts obsessively when you fly there, windy.com was actually pretty accurate for me the whole trip.

ive heard the wind near those waterfalls is unpredictable because of the mist and the geography just funnels everything weird. also worth noting iceland has its own airspace rules and some of the most

windy.com is the only way to fly in places like that, totally agree. i use it everywhere now not just for travel. glad you got it back though, losing a drone in a lava field or whatever would be a nightmare and theres no way youre finding it again.

ive heard the wind near those waterfalls is unpredictable because of the mist and the geography just funnels everything weird. also worth noting iceland has its own airspace rules and some of the most scenic areas are near controlled zones around reykjavik. did you have any issues with that or were you mostly out in the countryside the whole time?
