so ive been running about 340 acres of corn and soybeans for the past few years and we still do everything old school ? walk the fields, hire a crop consultant twice a season, the usual. my neighbor just picked up a Mavic 3 Multispectral and keeps telling me its a game changer but im not totally sold yet

the thing is i dont really have time to learn a whole new workflow mid-season and the upfront cost isnt nothing. like is the NDVI data actually actionable for someone at my scale or is it more useful if you're farming thousands of acres and can justify variable rate application. also wondering how much ground truth work you still have to do because i feel like some of the drone imagery ive seen just tells you what you already know by walking the field

anyone running a smaller operation that made the switch and actually saw a return on it? or am i just going to end up with pretty maps and the same yield

honestly at 340 acres it depends a lot on your field variability more than acreage. if your ground is pretty uniform you probably wont get much out of it. but if you've got compaction issues or drainage problems that show up inconsistently then the multispectral stuff can catch stress before you'd see it walking ? like a week or two earlier in some cases which actually matters for fungicide timing

the ground truth thing is real though, you still gotta go confirm what the maps are showing you. the drone doesnt tell you why a zone is stressed, just that it is. so you end up walking anyway, just more targeted. i'd say the time savings is less about scouting and more about knowing where to look instead of covering the whole field every time

for your scale i'd probably look at whether you can share costs with a neighbor or hire someone with a setup to fly a few missions before committing to buying your own. theres guys doing it as a service now for like 3-5 bucks an acre which might pencil out better than owning at your size

the Mavic 3 Multispectral is decent but the lens calibration panel workflow is kind of annoying, just heads up if you go that route. your neighbor probably already knows this but you have to do the calibration shot every flight or the reflectance data is basically garbage
