first race weekend went better than expected but i have questions about gate placement

so i finally did my first organized race last weekend, ran a 5" freestyle build which yeah i know not ideal but it was all i had and the organizer said it was fine for the beginner class. managed to not crash into anyone else which honestly was my main goal going in lol

the track was pretty fun but there were a couple of gates that felt really awkward, like there was this chicane section right after a long straight and you're coming in hot and the gates were just... close? i dont know if thats a track design thing or if experienced pilots are just way better at reading distance than i am yet. i kept overshooting the entry gate on almost every lap

also curious what the general consensus is on timing systems, the one they used was transponder-based and i had to borrow one. are people mostly running laptimers now or is transponder still the standard for actual competition? feels like something i should own if im gonna do this regularly

the overshooting on chicane entries is super normal when you're new, it's basically a throttle management thing more than anything else. you're probably carrying too much speed off the straight and not braking early enough, and then you panic-input on the entry gate and it all goes sideways. try flying the section in practice mode just doing slow passes until your brain builds the muscle memory for where to start rolling off throttle

as for timing, transponder is still pretty much the standard for anything official. AMB/MyLaps is what most sanctioned events use and you'll need your own transponder sooner or later if you're racing regularly. the RC4 is what most people run, it just clips onto the frame and you're done. laptimers are fine for practice sessions on your own stuff but they can be inconsistent depending on antenna placement and you wont get accurate head to head timing out of them

gate placement being awkward after a long straight is honestly a track design problem more than a you problem. a well designed track should give you at least a little breathing room before a technical section, or at minimum a clear sight line so you can set up earlier. some organizers are great at this and some just kind of throw gates wherever the field lets them

did the track have a posted map beforehand? walking the track before you fly is huge and a lot of beginners skip it
