so ive been doing tower inspections the old fashioned way for about 6 years now, climbing crews, full rigging setups, the whole thing. company i work for has been pushing to integrate drones into the workflow and honestly im on the fence about it.

we did a trial run last month with a matrice 300 and the zenmuse z30 combo and yeah the optical zoom is impressive, you can read antenna model numbers from like 80 meters without breaking a sweat. but the thing is the FAA part 107 waiver situation for some of our sites near class D airspace is a nightmare and we've had two authorizations take weeks to come back. meanwhile the climbing crew just... goes up.

i know some guys are swearing by the thermal add-on for finding loose or corroding connections before they become a real problem, and that part i actually believe. found a hot splice on a guy wire anchor last year that we never would have caught visually. but for the actual structural bolt checks and torque verification stuff you still need boots on the tower anyway so im not sure what percentage of inspections we're actually displacing versus just adding a step.

anyone running a full drone inspection program for telecom? curious what your actual time savings look like compared to traditional methods, not the marketing numbers.

we run a fleet of M300s for a utility client and honestly the time savings are real but not where you'd expect. the climb itself isnt even the longest part of a tower inspection ? its the documentation, the reporting, getting the crew in and out safely. where drones actually cut time is on the preliminary assessment, we can do a full visual sweep of a 200ft monopole in maybe 25 minutes and flag what actually needs hands on attention before anyone goes up. so the climbing crew isnt wasting time on sections that are fine.

the airspace auth thing is painful, no way around it. we batch our LAANC requests now and try to plan routes 2-3 weeks out which helps but yeah for emergency inspections it can still be a mess. some of our sites we got blanket COAs which made life way easier but thats a longer process to get there.

the thermal stuff is genuinely useful, we've caught coax moisture ingress that way a couple times. but youre right that you cant fully replace the climb for anything load-bearing or torque related. i think of it as reducing unnecessary climbs rather than eliminating climbs.

bit tangential but the z30 zoom is wild for reading serial plates and stuff like that, ive used it on substation inspections not towers and the standoff distance you get is genuinely useful from a safety standpoint. energized equipment and all that. dont know how that translates to your telecom use case exactly but the optical zoom vs digital zoom argument is pretty settled at this point, optical wins every time for documentation quality.
