so ive been flying my mini 3 pro for a few months now and theres a really nice open field about 2 miles from a small regional airport, like not a big international thing just one of those small ones with maybe a few prop planes and the occasional charter flight. DJI fly app is showing the area as yellow and my drone wont arm without me manually overriding it.

someone told me i need LAANC authorization but honestly i have no idea how that works or if it even applies to something this small. i looked it up and it seems like you go through an app like aloft or something? but then i also saw that some airspace isnt LAANC enabled and you have to do a manual waiver which takes like 90 days or something. how do i even know which situation im in

also does any of this change if im just flying really low, like under 50 feet? someone at my local hobby shop said altitude doesnt matter for the zone itself which makes sense i guess but im not sure

yeah the hobby shop guy is right, the airspace classification doesnt care how high you fly within the zone ? if youre in class D or class E surface airspace around an airport you still need authorization regardless of altitude. the 400ft ceiling is a separate thing from the lateral boundaries.

for LAANC ? download Aloft (used to be called Kittyhawk) or use the FAA DroneZone website. when you pull up your location it'll show you if that airspace is LAANC-enabled. if it is, you can get near-instant authorization right in the app, usually takes like 30 seconds. if its not enabled then yeah youre stuck doing a Part 107 waiver request and that can take weeks to months. for recreational flyers under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations theres a slightly different path but it still goes through LAANC if the airspace supports it.

two miles from a small regional is almost certainly going to be class D airspace or at least within the surface area, so just check Aloft first before assuming the worst. most of those smaller airports are LAANC enabled these days

just to add ? the DJI app warning zones dont always line up perfectly with actual FAA airspace boundaries so i wouldnt rely on that alone. like sometimes the app shows yellow way outside where the actual restriction starts. always cross reference with the B4UFLY app or Aloft before you decide anything based on what DJI is telling you
