so ive been watching fpv content for like 6 months now and im finally ready to actually buy something but im kind of paralyzed by the options. my budget is somewhere around $400-500 all in including goggles and controller if thats even realistic, i honestly dont know.

the dji avata 2 keeps coming up but thats already like $600 just for the basic kit and then some people say oh just build your own its cheaper and better. but i have zero soldering experience and the idea of wiring up a stack makes me nervous. i dont want to spend 3 months learning electronics before i even fly.

someone on reddit told me to just get a mobula7 or something from betafpv and learn on that, but then another person said tinywhoops are boring and ill plateau fast. i just want to actually fly and have fun without immediately crashing $500 into a wall. is dji o3 actually that much better than walksnail or am i just paying for the name at this point

honest answer: the avata 2 is a solid machine but youre paying a lot for the locked ecosystem. if you go that route you're kind of stuck with dji goggles, dji controller, dji everything. which isnt the worst thing in the world but it limits you later on when you want to branch out.

walksnail avatar has gotten really good, like genuinely close to o3 in most real world conditions. i ran the avatar hd system on my 5inch for almost a year before switching back to o3 mostly out of habit. the latency difference is there but its not massive unless youre racing gates at speed.

for a beginner id actually say look at the iflight nazgul eco or something in that range, its a prebuilt that flies betaflight so you learn the actual ecosystem, and you can pair it with walksnail to keep costs down. then if you want to go custom later you already understand whats going on under the hood. tinywhoops ARE a good starting point by the way regardless of what that person said, crashing a $30 mobula is way less painful than binning a 5inch on your third flight

i literally just went through this exact thing lol. ended up getting the betafpv aquila16 prebuilt with the literadio 3 and some cheap box goggles just to see if i even liked it. flew it for a month in my backyard and yeah i caught the bug hard. now im halfway through building my first 3inch and it doesnt feel as overwhelming as it did before because i at least understand the basics now. probably saved myself from buying the wrong expensive thing right off the bat
