switching from manual scouting to drone monitoring ? worth the cost?

so ive been running about 400 acres of corn and soy for the last few years and we do all our scouting on foot or with the UTV which honestly takes forever and we always feel like we're missing stuff in the far corners of fields anyway. a neighbor of mine just picked up a mavic 3 multispectral and is using it with some third party software to generate NDVI maps and he says he caught an iron deficiency early enough this season that it saved him a significant spray pass.

my question is more about the whole workflow than the drone itself ? like do you guys actually integrate this into your regular agronomist visits or is it kind of a separate thing you do yourself? i'm wondering if the data is actually actionable or if i'm just going to end up with pretty maps that i don't know what to do with. also curious whether the mavic 3 multispectral is even the right tool or if there's something better in that price range for field monitoring at this scale.

the workflow question is the real one honestly. the drone is the easy part. we use a p4 multispectral and yeah the NDVI maps look great but getting from "this zone looks stressed" to an actual prescription map that your variable rate applicator can use took us a while to figure out. we ended up partnering with an independent crop consultant who actually understands the imagery and can tell the difference between nitrogen stress and rootworm damage which look pretty similar in NDVI if you're not careful. once we had that piece sorted out it started making a lot more sense economically. at 400 acres you're probably right on the edge of where it pays for itself without the spraying side of things.

the mavic 3 multispectral is fine for that acreage, the sensor is decent, battery life is the usual dji thing where you're swapping every 25-30 min. for flat midwest fields it works. if you were doing hilly terrain with variable canopy i'd probably say look at something with better wind handling but for corn and soy rows it does the job.

we started doing this last year and honestly the first few months were kind of frustrating because we didnt have anyone to help interpret the data. just ended up with a subscription to some ag software that gave us maps but the recommendations felt generic. things got better once i took an actual course on precision ag through our extension office, which i didnt expect to be useful but it actually was. now i feel like i can at least ask smarter questions when i bring the maps to my agronomist.
