thinking about getting into fpv, is dji worth it or just build my own

so ive been watching fpv videos for like 6 months now and i finally want to pull the trigger on something. my buddy has a DJI avata and it looks cool but everyone on youtube keeps saying build your own if you want the real experience. im not totally sure what that means though because like... i can solder, ive done some electronics hobby stuff, but ive never built a drone before.
main question is like, is the avata or the O3 air unit stuff actually good or is it kind of a walled garden situation where youre locked into their ecosystem forever. i dont want to spend $800 on something and feel limited later. but i also dont want to spend 3 months building something that crashes on its first flight and costs me the same amount anyway.
what would you actually do if you were starting fresh right now
