so ive been putting this off for like a year and finally just scheduled the test because i figured thats the only way ill actually study for it. test is in about 5 weeks. ive been going through the FAA study guide and some of the practice tests online but honestly the airspace stuff is killing me. like i kind of get the basics but then they throw these sectional chart questions at me and i feel like im reading a foreign language. i know theres a lot on weather too which i havent even really touched yet.

my main thing is im not an aviation person at all, never been a pilot, dont really know any of the lingo so a lot of the material feels really dense. is there a way to focus on whats actually going to be on the test vs just reading the whole FAA handbook cover to cover because that thing is enormous

the sectional chart stuff is honestly the thing that trips most people up and its also the thing that shows up the most on the test so you're not wrong to worry about it. what helped me was just spending like an hour a day on the skyvector website looking at actual sectionals and cross referencing with the legend. once it clicks it really clicks but before that it just looks like noise.

for weather i'd say focus on METARs and TAFs more than anything else, they always have a few questions where you're decoding one of those. there's a tool called weatherspork that some people use to learn how to read them. the actual FAA handbook is way overkill for the test, i'd lean more on the Pilot Institute free course or the ASA test prep book. i passed with an 85 and probably only read like a third of the official handbook

i just passed mine two weeks ago so this is pretty fresh for me. i used the Pilot Institute course on youtube, its completely free and the guy breaks everything down really well for people who arent pilots. i watched all of it twice through honestly. the practice tests on their website are pretty close to the real thing format wise. airspace was like a third of my actual test so yeah dont skip that part even if its painful lol
