okay so background: ive been flying freestyle fpv for about 4 months, started on a simulator (velocidrone) for like 6 weeks before i ever touched real hardware, built a 5inch, the whole thing. and i am still binning it constantly. not like catastrophic crashes but clipping gates, misjudging gaps, that kind of stuff.

i feel like im improving but its slow and i dont really have anyone local to fly with so its mostly just me going out to a field and flailing around. the throttle management thing is starting to click but banking turns still feel really inconsistent ? sometimes i nail the exit angle and sometimes i just have no idea why it went wrong.

is there a specific way people actually drill maneuvers or is it just reps reps reps until your hands figure it out. i tried doing figure 8s for a whole session and it helped a bit but im not sure if thats the best use of time. also should i be going back to sim more or just take the crashes and keep flying real.

4 months and you're already past the "cant maintain altitude" stage so youre actually doing fine, that hump takes some people way longer. banking turns being inconsistent is super normal at your point ? the issue is usually that people try to fix the exit angle with roll when they should have set up the entry angle better. like the turn is already going wrong before you think it is.

for drilling, i'd say figure 8s are good but split them up. do your 8 but stop and think about which half felt better and why before you do the next one. just mindlessly lapping doesnt help as much as mindlessly lapping and occasionally being annoyed at yourself for a specific reason lol. also power loops and split-s taught me more about throttle and momentum than anything else, those two maneuvers kind of force you to understand what the quad is doing in 3d space rather than just steering it around.

sim vs real is always gonna be both. sim is good for trying stuff that would cost you props in real life, real is where you learn to read actual air and feel what the tune is doing. id say 60/40 real vs sim at your stage.

im probably not that far ahead of you tbh but one thing that clicked for me was slowing wayyy down and doing the same gate or gap at like 30% throttle until i could do it perfect every time, then gradually speeding up. going fast and crashing over and over doesnt teach you anything except how to rebuild. also idk what your rates are set to but if theyre too high early on your inputs are gonna be really twitchy and hard to learn from
