ok so i bought a dji mini 2 se last week and ive been too nervous to actually fly it outside yet. i did the simulator thing for like an hour but it doesnt really feel the same. my main question is like... where do i even start? do i just go to a big open field and try it? i live near a park but i dont know if thats allowed. also i keep reading about registering it with the faa and i honestly dont understand if i need to do that for just messing around in my backyard or whatever. sorry if this is a dumb question, ive never owned anything like this before

not a dumb question at all, everyone starts here. so the faa thing ? if your drone is under 250g you dont need to register for recreational flying, and i think the mini 2 se is just barely under that

the park thing is tricky because a lot of parks especially national or state ones are no fly zones. theres an app called b4ufly that shows you whats restricted near you, worth downloading before you g

not a dumb question at all, everyone starts here. so the faa thing ? if your drone is under 250g you dont need to register for recreational flying, and i think the mini 2 se is just barely under that so you should be fine. but honestly look that up yourself just to confirm because the rules change and i dont want to steer you wrong.

for actually learning to fly, yeah open field is the move. go somewhere with zero trees and zero people around and just hover it at like chest height for the first few flights. dont try to do anything fancy, just get used to how it responds to your inputs. the mini series is pretty stable so it wont just fly away on you, but wind can still catch you off guard. mornings tend to be calmer if you can manage it.
