MMCX vs SMA connector reliability - real world experiences needed

  • Members

I'm building my first racing quad and torn between VTX connector types. U.FL seems too fragile (30 mating cycles), SMA is bulky but rated for 500+ cycles, and MMCX sits in the middle with ~500 cycles. Everyone says MMCX is the sweet spot for weight vs durability, but I'm seeing mixed reports online.

Has anyone actually worn out MMCX connectors in practice? The click-together mechanism seems convenient for antenna swaps, but I'm worried about crashes loosening them over time. For a 5" freestyle build where I'll probably crash semi-regularly, should I just go with proven SMA despite the weight penalty?

I've been running MMCX on three different quads for over 2 years now and never had a failure. The snap connection is actually more secure in crashes than you'd think - it's the antenna itself that usually breaks first, not the connector.

Switched from SMA to MMCX last year and honestly can't tell much difference in durability. The weight savings is noticeable though, especially on a racing build. Just make sure you get quality connectors from TBS or similar reputable brands.

For your first build I'd actually recommend sticking with SMA. Yes it's heavier, but there are way more antenna options available and you can use the same antennas on your goggles and VTX. SMA offers the widest range of available antennas which gives you more flexibility as you learn what works best for your flying style.
