switching from manual scouting to drone monitoring - worth it for a mid-size operation?

so ive been running about 400 acres of corn and soybeans for the past few years and we still do most of our scouting on foot or by ATV which honestly takes forever and we always feel like were missing stuff especially on the far fields. been looking seriously at getting into drone-based monitoring, probably starting with just RGB imaging and maybe adding NDVI capability down the line.

the thing im trying to wrap my head around is whether the ROI actually works out for an operation our size. i know the big 2000+ acre guys can justify a DJI Agras or whatever pretty easily but for 400 acres im not sure if im buying a solution or buying a problem. talked to a sales rep at an ag show and obviously they made it sound like pure magic which made me more skeptical not less.

anyone running something similar on smaller acreage? what are you actually using and does it pay for itself in caught issues early enough to matter or is it mostly just cool data you look at after the fact

400 acres is honestly right on the edge where it starts making sense but you probably dont need anything crazy expensive to get value out of it. ive been using a Mavic 3 Multispectral on about 320 acres for two seasons now and the NDVI maps have caught nitrogen stress patches and a fungal thing in my wheat last year that I genuinely would have walked right past. the flight planning through DJI Terra is pretty straightforward once you get used to it, whole field done in maybe 40 minutes at 120m altitude with good overlap.

the data processing side is where people underestimate the time investment though. if you're not into GIS stuff at all there's a learning curve with Pix4Dfields or whatever you end up using. but for catching problems early enough to actually respond to them? yeah it pays. i stopped a disease spread last july that I think would have cost me way more than the drone did.

im kind of in the same boat as you, just smaller, around 200 acres. watched a ton of youtube on this and my honest takeaway is that for pure scouting the entry cost is lower than people think if you already fly recreationally. the expensive part is the multispectral sensor not the airframe. RGB alone from a regular mavic will show you a lot more than people give it credit for, stressed crops look different even in regular photos once you know what youre looking at.

spraying is a whole different conversation though, that requires actual ag certification in most states and the equipment cost is a completely different tier. if youre just talking monitoring i say just start with what you have or get a mid range drone and see if you actually use the data before committing to a $10k multispectral rig
