so ive been building my own quads for like 4 years now and always kind of looked down on prebuilts if im being honest. but my buddy kept hyping up his Diatone Roma F5 and i was between builds anyway so i just grabbed one to mess around with.

first impressions were actually pretty solid out of the box. maiden flight was fine, no obvious issues, motors ran cool. but the stock tune is... okay. its not bad exactly but its kind of mushy on fast direction changes and the filtering felt heavy, like there was a noticeable delay when i was doing tight lines in the trees. ran Blackbox for a few packs and the P terms were way conservative on roll and pitch, which i kind of expected.

spent maybe an hour adjusting in Betaflight and got it feeling a lot closer to my own 5inch builds. bumped master multiplier a bit, dropped some of the D term filtering, and honestly it flies pretty well now. the stack they shipped it with seems decent, no issues with the ESCs so far on 6S.

my only real complaint is the camera angle was like 20 degrees which is useless for anything other than cruising. and the vtx power was capped at 200mw out of the box which i get why they do it but still annoying to have to go in and change.

anyway just figured id share since i see a lot of people asking if prebuilts are worth it. i think yeah, if you actually tune them. stock tune on most of these things is just a starting point.

yeah the Roma F5 is a solid frame at least, even if the tune leaves something to be desired. i had basically the same experience with a Flywoo Explorer LR a while back, flew fine but felt like it was flying through mud until i got into the PID tab. i think these companies tune conservatively on purpose because they cant know what props you'll run or what battery.

what props did you end up on? i found the stock HQ 5.1x3 that came with mine were a big part of why it felt sluggish. threw on some Ethix S5s and it was a completely different quad even before touching PIDs.

this is kind of reassuring actually because im looking at prebuilts right now for my first real fpv quad. was worried if i couldnt tune it myself id be stuck with whatever it flies like. how hard is the betaflight stuff if youre pretty new to it? like is it trial and error or is there a baseline you work from
