been running a mavic 3 pro for most of my commercial work, landscape stuff mostly, some real estate. the image quality is honestly pretty great for 95% of what i do and im not complaining. but ive been getting more requests lately for stuff where the client specifically asks about larger sensor options and i keep having to explain why a 4/3 sensor is actually really capable which i feel like shouldnt be a conversation im having in.

anyway ive been looking at moving to something that can carry a full m4/3 or even aps-c payload, so like a heavy lifter with a proper cinema gimbal. the freefly ember came up, also been looking at the dji matrice lineup with a zenmuse gimbal. the jump in cost is obviously significant but more than that im worried about the operational overhead. battery life tanks, you need cases for everything, setup time, flying in more restricted categories depending on weight.

for people who made this kind of jump ? was there an actual noticeable difference that clients responded to or is it more of a personal quality thing where you just feel better about the deliverable. genuinely trying to figure out if its a business decision or just gear acquisition syndrome talking

honestly i went through exactly this about three years ago and my take is its a business decision first. if clients are asking about larger sensors and youre losing jobs over it then yeah it makes sense. but if youre just assuming they want it because they mentioned it once, most real estate and landscape clients genuinely cannot tell the difference in the final cut between a good 4/3 and an aps-c when its graded properly. the conversation you feel like you shouldnt be having is actually just client education and that never goes away no matter what you fly.

that said the matrice with a zenmuse is a different beast operationally and not in a bad way once you get used to it. the stabilization on the x series gimbals is noticeably smoother on long lens work which is where smaller gimbal systems start to show their limits. if youre doing any kind of telephoto or slow cinematic moves its worth it. for wide landscape stuff probably not.

the weight jump is real and it sneaks up on you in ways you dont expect. its not just battery life, its like you suddenly need a proper pelican case setup, youre thinking differently about where you can park to set up, wind limits become more conservative because the gimbal starts working harder, everything becomes a slightly bigger production. im not saying its not worth it because it can absolutely be worth it but the operational overhead is a real thing people undrestate when they're just comparing spec sheets.
