okay so ive been flying for about 8 months now, got my part 107 last spring, and i feel like i still dont fully understand when LAANC is actually required vs when im just supposed to know i cant fly there at all. like i checked B4UFLY and it showed a controlled airspace overlay near me but the LAANC authorization came back instantly at 0 feet which i thought meant i couldnt fly but my buddy said 0 feet just means the automatic ceiling is 0 and i need to request a higher altitude through the DroneZone instead. is that right? also does this even apply if im flying recreationally because i thought maybe part 107 has different rules than hobbyist stuff. its getting confusing keeping track of all the different apps and systems

yeah your buddy is basically right. the 0ft LAANC ceiling doesnt mean no fly, it means the FAA hasnt set an automatic approval ceiling there so you'd have to go through DroneZone and file a manual waiver request. that can take weeks so most people just find a different spot honestly. the recreational vs 107 thing is a real distinction too ? under recreational you're supposed to be using a Community Based Organization's rules (like AMA) in addition to FAA stuff but for controlled airspace the LAANC process is the same either way. just use Aloft or AirMap and it'll walk you through it, B4UFLY is fine for a quick check but i find it a bit clunky for actually getting auth

i had the exact same confusion when i started. what helped me was thinking of it this way ? LAANC is only a thing inside controlled airspace (class B C D and some E surfaces). if youre out in class G you dont need any authorization at all, just follow the standard rules. the tricky part is there's a ton of invisible class E surface airspace around smaller airports that doesnt show up super obviously on maps and thats where people get caught off guard. definitely download Aloft and just check before every single flight until it becomes second nature, its way clearer than trying to read the sectional charts yourself
