failed part 107 twice, what am i missing

  • Members

yeah this is embarassing to post but whatever. failed it twice now, first time was a 68 and second time a 70 so i am getting closer but its frustrating. i feel like i understand the material when im studying but then i get in there and the questions are worded so weird that i second guess everything. im using the same study materials both times which is probably the problem. i know the basics, i fly commercially already just without the cert which i know is bad, my employer is actually requiring me to get it by end of quarter so theres some pressure. anyone been in a similar spot or know what specifically trips people up on the wording

the wording thing is real and i think its something people dont talk about enough. the FAA writes these questions in a way that feels like theyre trying to trick you even when theyre not. what helped

dont feel bad i know a few people who took it 3 times. the test is genuinely kind of poorly written in places. that said 70 means you're close, youre probably getting tripped up on a specific category

the wording thing is real and i think its something people dont talk about enough. the FAA writes these questions in a way that feels like theyre trying to trick you even when theyre not. what helped me was slowing way down and like, re-reading each question twice before even looking at the answers. also a lot of people get tripped up because they pick the answer that sounds right in general instead of the answer that is technically correct according to FAA regulations specifically. those two things arent always the same. if you've been flying commercially without it you probably have practical knowledge that might actually be working against you, like you might know what you'd actually do in a situation but the test wants what the regs say to do. try the Jason Cole study guide if you havent, his explanations of why wrong answers are wrong helped me more than just knowing the right answers

dont feel bad i know a few people who took it 3 times. the test is genuinely kind of poorly written in places. that said 70 means you're close, youre probably getting tripped up on a specific category, after your second attempt did they give you a breakdown of which areas you missed in? they do give you a subject area breakdown on the score report i think. if you can identify whether its consistently airspace or weather or regs or whatever then you can focus there instead of restudying everything again from scratch
