so ive been running an Inspire 2 with the X7 for about four years now and its been my main workhorse for commercial jobs, mostly real estate and some indie film stuff. the thing has just been bulletproof honestly. dual operator setup is a pain when its just me on a solo job but for the cinema work its kind of irreplaceable because the gimbal operator can really work the shot independently while i focus on flight.

anyway my question is whether anyone has actually made the jump to something newer and whether the image quality justifies it. ive been looking at the Zenmuse X9 on the Inspire 3 but the cost is just insane. like i get that its a cinema grade sensor and the 8K raw is genuinely useful if youre delivering for IMAX or streaming platforms that care about that stuff but for most of my clients honestly ProRes from the X7 is more than enough.

whats the actual argument for upgrading at this point, is it just the sensor size or is there something about how the Inspire 3 handles that makes it worth the price difference

honestly the X9 on the I3 is a different category of camera, like comparing a RED to an Alexa kind of different in terms of what it does to a production pipeline. if your clients are asking for it by name or you're delivering to platforms that specify large format capture then yeah it matters. but if you're doing $3k real estate jobs or even mid-budget commercials the X7 footage is still competitive, nobody's turning down work because of that sensor.

the other thing people dont talk about enough is the transmission system on the Inspire 3, O3 Pro at that range with that reliability is genuinely better than what we had on the I2 with Lightbridge, had a few sketchy moments on long distance shots with the older system that i just dont get anymore. so its not only the camera, the whole platform is tighter. but yeah if budget is the question then no, dont upgrade just to upgrade.

i made the jump last year and kind of regret it only because of the maintenance costs not the actual performance. the drone itself is incredible but when something needs servicing youre down for weeks and DJI care on that tier is expensive. the X7 footage honestly still holds up especially if youre grading well. i'd say stay where you are unless a client is specifically paying for it.
