Our team has been tasked with inspecting a series of 300ft+ cell towers in an area that consistently sees 15-25mph winds with gusts up to 35mph. Standard operating procedures call for <12mph, but project timeline is tight and weather window is narrow.

Equipment: Using Matrice 400 with extended flight time and obstacle avoidance. Experienced Part 107 pilots, but this is pushing our comfort zone on wind limits.

What are the real-world limits you've pushed for tower work? Any specific flight patterns or techniques that work better in gusty conditions?

I've done tower work up to 20mph sustained with the M400, but you need to modify your approach. Stay further from the structure (30ft minimum vs 15ft normal), use slower ascent rates, and forget about close-up detail shots in high wind - plan for multiple return trips when conditions improve.

Wind around tall structures creates serious turbulence - I learned this the hard way. The leeward side can have downdrafts that will slam your drone down. Always approach from upwind side and never fly in the wind shadow. Also consider the liability if you damage equipment or hurt someone.

Check if your Matrice has the updated ESCs and newer propellers - they handle gusty conditions much better. Also use the sport mode sparingly but it can help you maintain position in strong crosswinds. Most important: have a spotter watching wind meters constantly, not just preflight checks.
