trying to get better at manual flying but hitting a wall

ok so background ? been on a mini 3 pro for about 8 months, mostly just photography stuff, GPS assisted always on, the whole deal. decided a few weeks ago i actually want to learn to fly properly and started spending time in the DJI simulator and also just flying around in a big empty field with all the assists turned way down.

the problem im running into is that im fine in calm conditions, like i can do slow orbits and figure 8s and feel decent about it. but the second there's any real wind my inputs just fall apart. its like i know what i want the drone to do but theres this lag between me seeing the drift and me doing the right thing about it and by the time i correct im overcorrecting and then its this whole oscillation thing.

is this just a hours thing or is there something specific i should be practicing to get my reaction inputs tightened up? feels like im plateauing a bit.

the oscillation thing is super common and its almost always because youre reacting to where the drone is rather than anticipating where its going. wind correction especially ? you want to be putting in small constant corrections instead of waiting till the drift is obvious and then jamming a stick. try practicing just holding a fixed point hover in light wind and consciously making tiny tiny stick inputs constantly rather than hands off and react. it feels weird at first but it trains you to stay ahead of it instead of chasing it.

also simulator time is good but outdoor time in actual variable conditions teaches you things the sim just cant replicate. the sim wind models are pretty simplified compared to real turbulence.

i went through the exact same thing maybe six months ago. what actually clicked for me was flying closer to the ground where i could really see the scale of my corrections relative to fixed objects. like 10-15ft AGL doing slow passes near a fence line or something. forces you to be precise and you learn real fast when youre overinputting. might sound boring but it genuinely helped more than any of the fancy maneuver practice i was trying to do.
