so i just got my first drone like two weeks ago and i live near the coast in socal and i have no idea what the rules are. ive been reading stuff online but half of it seems outdated and the other half is super confusing. like i get that there's FAA stuff but then california also has its own rules? and then the city has rules? its like three layers of rules that all say different things

basically i just want to fly at the beach on a weekend morning when its not crowded. is that legal or am i gonna get my drone confiscated or something. i registered it already on the FAA website so i thought i was good but someone in another thread mentioned state parks vs city beaches and now im more confused than before

okay so the short answer is it depends a lot on which beach specifically. california state beaches are managed differently than city beaches and national park stuff is a whole other thing. generally speaking if its a regular city beach you might be okay as long as you're following FAA Part 107 or recreational rules depending on if you have your license, but a lot of coastal cities in socal have their own ordinances that ban drones entirely or restrict them to certain hours or areas.

santa monica for example is basically a no-go. san diego has some spots that are fine. i'd honestly just look up your specific city name plus drone ordinance and also check if the beach falls under california state parks jurisdiction because those have a blanket no drone policy in a lot of areas. the FAA registration gets you in the door federally but local rules can still shut you down, that's the part that trips everyone up.

yeah same situation here when i started, it's genuinely confusing because nobody explains that federal rules and local rules coexist. i ended up just emailing my city parks department and they actually replied with a pretty clear answer. took like 3 days but at least i knew for sure. better than guessing and having a ranger walk up to you mid-flight
