been flying for about 8 months now mostly at parks and open fields and i keep seeing people use those foldable landing pads. like the bright orange or yellow circle ones. im starting to wonder if im missing something or if its just one of those things people buy and dont really need.

i usually just look for a patch of flat grass or concrete to land on. only had one issue where i landed in some tall-ish grass and got some debris in the motor area which was annoying to clean out. is that basically the main reason people use them or is there more to it

the debris thing is genuinely the main reason imo. grass and dust getting kicked up on takeoff and landing is real, especially in dry conditions. ive had to clean my motors out more times than i care to admit before i started using one. also if the ground is wet the pad keeps the drone from sitting in moisture while youre switching batteries or checking footage.

i got one of those foldable ones off amazon for like 12 bucks and it rolls up small enough to fit in a side pocket. not a life changing purchase but i do use it almost every flight now just out of habit. the bright color also helps with orientation in weird lighting which is a small bonus

honestly thought it was gimmicky too until I started shooting in dusty areas out west. changed my mind pretty quick after a landing in loose gravel sent a bunch of stuff right into the intakes. nothing broke but it was a pain to sort out. the pads are cheap enough that its kind of a no-brainer at this point, just toss it in the bag and forget about it untill you need it
