so ive been doing tower inspections for about 3 years now, traditional rope access and bucket trucks mostly, and my company is pushing us to integrate drones into the workflow. i get the safety argument, i really do, but im trying to figure out if the actual output is good enough to replace a proper physical inspection or if we're just doing it because it looks cool on a proposal.

right now i'm looking at the Matrice 300 RTK with the H20T payload which seems like the obvious choice but man that price point is brutal for a small operation like ours. has anyone actually used this setup for tower work specifically? the thermal + zoom combo sounds great on paper but i want to know if the zoom is actually resolving bolt corrosion and cable wear at the heights we're talking about. some of these towers are 300+ feet and even with a 23x optical zoom i'm not sure you're getting the detail you need on a 3/4 inch mounting bolt.

also the FAA Part 107 stuff for flying near comms infrastructure ? anyone run into issues with that? we operate in a bunch of different airspace categories and im wondering if there's a blanket waiver situation that makes sense or if we're filing LAANC every single job.

yeah the M300 with H20T is what most of the serious tower inspection outfits are running. the 23x optical is honestly fine for surface corrosion checks and antenna mount condition, you're not gonna catch every micro-crack but that's not really what the drone is for anyway ? it's doing the visual triage so you know where to actually send a climber. once you reframe it that way the value prop makes a lot more sense.

we've been doing this for about 18 months and the workflow we landed on is drone first to build the full visual record and flag anything that looks sketchy, then climbers only go up to the flagged sections. cut our rope time by maybe 40% which more than pays for the gear over a season. the thermal is underrated for this ? caught a corroded connection that was heating up on an active tower that the visual alone wouldve missed.

on the airspace side, LAANC has been fine for most of what we do. the ones that get annoying are sites near class B or on top of hills close to regional airports. no real shortcut there, just plan ahead and give yourself more lead time than you think you need.

dont sleep on the Autel EVO II Pro for this either if the M300 budget is the sticking point. obviously not the same class of tool but for smaller towers or preliminary surveys it does the job and the 6k sensor is surprisingly sharp. probably not your answer for full professional inspection deliverables but worth knowing the option exists.
