flying in gusty wind ? how do you actually get better at this

  • Members

so ive been flying for about 8 months now mostly in calm conditions and i feel pretty solid, smooth movements, decent framing, whatever. but the second wind picks up past like 10-12mph i just feel like a beginner again. drone feels twitchy, i overcorrect, footage is garbage.

was out last weekend and wind was probably gusting to 18-20mph and i just gave up after 5 minutes because i was fighting it the whole time and getting nowhere. my rates feel fine in calm air but in wind everything just feels wrong. im on a 5inch freestyle build so its not like im flying a mavic that just holds position, i actually have to fly the thing.

is there a way to systematically get better at this or do you just kind of suffer through it until your brain adapts? feels like there should be some technique to it but i cant find anything that isnt just "practice more" which is not helpful

honestly the biggest thing for me was learning to anticipate instead of react. when you react to a gust you're already behind it and you end up chasing the aircraft all over the place. if you watch the trees before your flight and pay attention to where the gusts are coming from you start to get a feel for it. not that you can predict exactly when but you can at least be mentally ready instead of surprised every time.

also your rates might actually be part of the issue. some people go the opposite direction and lower rates in wind thinking it'll be easier to control but i actually bumped mine up slightly and it helped because the aircraft responds faster to my inputs. you have to be smoother though or it amplifies everything. took me a while to get the balance right. and yeah there's no shortcut, you kind of do just have to fly in bad conditions a lot. simulator time in wind doesn't really replicate it either in my experience.

5inch in 18mph gusts is rough depending on your build weight. what motors are you running? i found going to slightly heavier props helped with stability in wind, less susceptible to getting pushed around. still gotta fly it but it doesnt feel as squirrely.
