been doing cell tower and bridge inspections for about two years now mostly with a Mavic 3 Enterprise and im starting to feel limited by the built in camera for certain close-up structural stuff. the 4/3 sensor is fine for wide area but when clients want to zoom into a specific crack or weld theres only so much you can do in post even with the 7x tele lens option.

so ive been looking at moving to a heavier platform, probably the M300 or waiting to see if the M350 makes more sense, and using a Gremsy T3 or T7 with a third party mirrorless or maybe a Sony ILX-LR1 setup. the problem is the cost jump is significant and im trying to figure out if the 3-axis stabilization on something like the Gremsy actually holds up in windy conditions compared to what im used to with the built-in DJIs. the marketing material is always perfect conditions footage obviously.

anyone actually running a Gremsy setup for commercial work? mostly curious about real world stabilization quality in like 15-20 knot wind situations and whether the payload weight actually affects flight time as badly as the spec sheets suggest. the math on battery life looks pretty rough.

ran a Gremsy S1 on an older Matrice 200 for about a year doing powerline surveys. stabilization in wind is genuinely impressive, like noticeably better than i expected going in. 15 knots is fine, 20 knots you start to see some micro jitter in the footage if youre doing long telephoto shots but its nothing like what youd get on a fixed mount. the main thing people dont talk about enough is the tuning process ? out of the box the Gremsy PIDs are not optimized for your specific camera and lens combo and you will spend a few hours getting it right. theres a decent community on their forum with baseline PID settings for common payloads which helps.

battery life hit is real. with an ILX-LR1 and a decent zoom lens youre looking at maybe 65-70% of your normal flight time on the M300 in my experience. factor that into your ops planning, i usually just bring more batteries and accept shorter sorties for the detail work.

the ILX-LR1 is a solid choice for inspection work btw, low latency live view and the remote shutter control integrates pretty cleanly. only thing i'd say is the lens choice matters a lot more than people realize for this kind of work ? a lot of guys throw a 24-70 on it but for actual crack documentation at distance you really want something in the 100mm+ range and then the gimbal load calculation gets more complicated depending on lens weight. just something to think about before you commit to a lens system
