so ive been doing some small farm mapping jobs on the side, mostly corn and soybean fields in the midwest, and i started out with dronedeploy because the UI is genuinely pretty easy to get up and running fast. but the subscription cost is starting to sting and a few guys in my area are swearing by pix4d for the accuracy on their NDVI outputs.

my current setup is a mavic 3 multispectral and im doing mostly plant health maps for a couple local co-ops. the dronedeploy results have been fine honestly but i keep second guessing myself when i look at the price tier i'd need to actually get the good processing options. pix4dfields specifically is what i've been looking at but i dunno, the workflow seems more involved and i'm not sure my clients would notice the difference anyway.

anyone actually switched between the two for ag work specifically? not just general mapping, like actual crop health stuff. curious if the ground control point handling is better in pix4d or if im overthinking this whole thing

honestly for ag clients who are just looking at NDVI zone maps to decide where to apply fert, dronedeploy is probably fine. ive used both pretty extensively and the output accuracy difference is real but its mostly meaningful when youre doing topographic work with elevation deliverables or if someone needs it to hold up to survey-grade specs. for plant health visualization the agronomist looking at your map isnt gonna care if your orthomosaic is off by 3cm.

that said pix4dfields does handle the multispectral band calibration a bit more transparently in my opinion, you can see exactly what its doing with the reflectance targets which i appreciate. dronedeploy kind of black boxes some of that. if your co-op clients ever start asking harder questions about methodology it might matter. but if theyre happy now i wouldnt blow up a workflow that works just to save yourself some anxiety about the software

i switched from dronedeploy to pix4d about a year ago and the learning curve is real, not gonna sugarcoat it. the first few projects i was constantly digging through the documentation trying to figure out why my point cloud looked weird or why the mosaic had these weird color inconsistencies along the flight lines. turns out i was setting my overlap wrong for the altitude i was flying but pix4d doesnt really hold your hand through that stuff the way dronedeploy does.

for what its worth though my GCP workflow is way tighter now and i feel like i actually understand whats happening under the hood. probably overkill for basic ag stuff but if you ever want to branch into construction or land development surveying the pix4d output is easier to hand off to engineers without them questioning it
