flying in wind ? when do you just call it and land

so ive been flying my avata 2 for about 8 months now and wind is still the thing that messes me up the most. like i can handle light gusts no problem but yesterday i was out at the coast and it was probably 18-20mph sustained with gusts up to 25 or so and i kept second guessing myself the whole time. got some okay footage but i was fighting it the whole flight and burned through battery way faster than normal.

what's everyone's actual threshold for calling it? i know the specs say it can handle up to 27mph or whatever but flying in that feels nothing like flying in calm air and i dont trust myself to make smart decisions when im already stressed about the wind. also does anyone have drills or anything they actually practice to get more comfortable in wind or is it just one of those things you have to earn through experience

25mph gusts with an avata sounds miserable tbh. i tried flying my mini 4 in similar conditions once just to see and yeah it handles it technically but it felt sketchy and the footage was unusable anyw

honestly the battery drain is your real signal more than any wind speed number. if you're burning 20-30% more than usual just holding position then you're already in territory where a gust could put you in a situation you cant recover from. i fly a lot on the oregon coast and i've learned to just watch the whitecaps and treetops for a few minutes before i even arm. if stuff is moving unpredictably rather than steadily, that's my cue to pack up regardless of what the weather app says.

for practice ? figure 8s in moderate wind actually helped me a lot. forces you to deal with crosswind on every leg of the maneuver instead of just one direction. do it low and slow until you stop overcorrecting and then push the speed up. took me maybe 3-4 sessions before i stopped feeling like i was wrestling the stick.
