so ive been running Inspire 2s with the X7 for about three years now, mostly real estate and some commercial stuff, and a client just came to me asking about a full cinema package for a pretty serious documentary project. they want that full frame look and the producer keeps mentioning the X9-8K air like its some magic bullet.

honestly my concern is less about image quality and more about the whole workflow changing on me mid-project. the X9 raw files are massive and my current on-set workflow is pretty dialed in around the CinemaDNG pipeline from the X7. also not sure how my DITs are gonna feel about suddenly switching colorspace and raw format on a 3 week shoot.

has anyone actually done back to back tests with both cameras on the Inspire 2 frame or are people mostly just going off specs sheets. and yeah i know the Inspire 3 exists but renting two of those for the whole shoot plus spare batteries is gonna be a very different conversation with production.

ran into this exact situation last year on a branded doc for a car company. ended up sticking with X7 for most of the aerial work because the client's color pipeline was already built around that S-Log2 flavor and nobody wanted to rebuild LUTs mid-project. the X9 footage genuinely looks incredible but it created this weird two-track problem where the colorist had to manage two completely different starting points and she was not happy about it.

if your DIT has never touched X9 raw before I'd seriously budget a day or two just for camera tests before the shoot even starts. the files are not just big they're structured differently and certain ingesting tools handle them weirdly depending on version. not trying to talk you out of it just saying go in with eyes open.

the X9 on inspire 3 is honestly a different beast than sticking it on an I2 body, the gimbal stabilization architecture changed quite a bit and some of the dual operator stuff works way better. but yeah if budget is already tight renting two I3s plus the operator fees is gonna eat a proposal alive. what's the actual deliverable format for the doc? if they're not going to a cinema pipeline anyway the X7 at its best is still really hard to argue with.
