Inspire 3 payload options ? anyone tried third party mounting solutions for heavier sensors

  • Members

right so the Inspire 3 with the Zenmuse X9 is obviously the intended setup and it works beautifully, not disputing that. but ive got a project coming up where the director wants to use a specific lens that doesnt play nice with the DL mount without an adapter and the adapter stacks are getting kind of ridiculous weight wise.

i know the I3 has that lower weight limit on the gimbal interface compared to something like a Freefly or a heavy lift platform but i was wondering if anyone has experimented with aftermarket cage or mounting rigs that redistribute the load a bit differently. seen some stuff floating around from european rental houses but nothing concrete in terms of actual flight testing or how it affects the IMU calibration.

the project is a fairly high budget narrative short so failure isnt really an option, just trying to figure out if there's a cleaner solution than telling the DP we need to swap lenses

honestly for a narrative short at that budget level id just spec out a Freefly Alta X or talk to a heavy lift operator. the Inspire 3 is incredible but its still a closed ecosystem when you start push

what lens is it specifically? sometimes the adapter stack issue is solvable with a different adapter combination, had a similar situation with an anamorphic setup and ended up finding a single machine

honestly for a narrative short at that budget level id just spec out a Freefly Alta X or talk to a heavy lift operator. the Inspire 3 is incredible but its still a closed ecosystem when you start pushing the gimbal mount outside of what DJI designed it for. the IMU and gimbal stabilization are tuned specifically for the X9 weight and balance and any significant deviation from that and youre going to see it in the footage, might be subtle but its there especially in anything that involves yaw moves.

if the DP is set on a specific lens maybe the conversation is about whether a ground based technocrane shot achieves the same thing rather than compromising the aerial platform. i know thats not the answer you wanted

what lens is it specifically? sometimes the adapter stack issue is solvable with a different adapter combination, had a similar situation with an anamorphic setup and ended up finding a single machined adapter that replaced like three stacked ones. also what focal length are we talking because some of the wider DL native options might actually get you close to what the DP is after if you show them the test footage side by side
