DJI mini 4k vs the new regs ? anyone actually read the full thing

  • Members

so i've been trying to wrap my head around the updated remote ID rules and whether the mini 4k actually needs anything extra or if it ships compliant out of the box. i went down a rabbit hole on the FAA site for like 45 minutes and honestly came out more confused than when i started. some forums are saying its fine as-is, others are saying you still need a broadcast module depending on where you fly. my buddy just bought one last month and the guy at the shop told him he was good to go no questions asked but i dunno if that shop dude actually knows what he's talking about.

also separately, did anyone catch that thing about the new EU drone regs rolling out? feels like every six months theres another update and half the info online is already outdated by the time you find it. would be nice if DJI just put a big banner on the product page that says exactly what you need to do legally before you fly. anyway just curious what people who actually fly these things think, not looking for a legal opinion obviously just real world experience

yeah the remote ID thing is genuinely confusing and i dont blame you for being lost. from what i understand the mini 4k does have broadcast remote ID built in so you dont need a separate module, but you still have to register with the FAA if its over 250g which i believe it is just barely. the shop guy was probably half right. the thing that trips people up is that registration and remote ID are two separate requirements and a lot of people conflate them.

the EU stuff is a whole other beast, i fly in the UK occasionally and even post-brexit they have their own version of the A1/A2/A3 category system that sorta mirrors the EU one but not exactly. honestly the best source ive found is the actual CAA or FAA primary sources rather than any blog or youtube video because those go stale so fast. someone posted a good breakdown in this forum a few months back actually, might be worth searching for it.

same boat here, just got into flying this year and the regulations stuff is lowkey the most overwhelming part. like i just want to fly the thing at the park lol. i ended up just doing the TRUST test online which was free and pretty quick, and registered my drone, and i think that covers the basics for recreational flying at least in the US. havent looked into the EU stuff at all since im not flying there anytime soon
