so ive been flying my mavic 3 for about a year now and wind is still the thing that messes with me the most mentally. like i can handle 15mph gusts pretty well at this point but last weekend i was out at the coast and the wind was doing this weird thing where it was calm for a few seconds then just slamming sideways. my fpv brain says keep flying but my cinematic brain is like this footage is gonna be garbage.

i ended up landing after maybe 8 minutes because i just wasnt confident. no crash, no drama, but i keep second guessing myself. wondering if other people have like actual rules they follow or if its just gut feel at a certain point. also curious if wind at altitude is just something you have to accept as different from ground level because man that surprised me when i first started going higher.

honestly its mostly gut feel after enough flights but there are some things i watch for. if trees near me are doing full whip movements i usually stay grounded or keep it low and close. the gusts you're describing at the coast are the worst because the drone handles sustained wind fine but those sudden lateral hits can saturate your roll/pitch authority depending on how aggressive your expo is set.

altitude wind is genuinely a different animal. down low you get ground effect and terrain breaking up the flow but up higher it can be way more consistent or way more chaotic depending on conditions. i usually do a quick hover at like 50m and just watch how much the drone is fighting before i commit to any movement. if its burning significant stick input just to hold position on a calm looking day, thats usually my sign to wrap up or stay low.

yeah the coast wind thing is real i had the exact same experience near some cliffs last summer. the problem is you also get rotor wash bouncing off terrain features and stuff which makes the telemetry kinda lie to you about what the air is actually doing around the drone. i dont have a hard rule but 20mph sustained with unpredictable gusts is usually where i stop having fun and start just stressing about the bird
