alright so we're finally pulling the trigger on a dedicated spray drone for our operation and i've been going back and forth between the T40 and the T50 for the past month. the T50 is obviously the newer platform and the 40kg payload sounds great on paper but im trying to figure out if its actually meaningfully better for real field work or if the T40 at 40L tank capacity is already more than enough for most applications.

the coaxial rotor setup on the T50 is interesting and DJI claims better canopy penetration but ive seen mixed things about that in practice. one guy in another thread said the downwash pattern is different enough that it actually matters for certain crops, wheat especially, but i dont know if thats just forum noise.

we'd be doing mostly soybeans, some corn, and a little bit of specialty vegetable work. probably starting a service business on the side once we get comfortable. anybody running the T50 in actual field conditions yet? the T40 has more of a track record obviously but if the T50 is genuinely the better tool id rather start there and not feel like i bought last gen hardware six months from now.

been running T40s for two seasons doing contract work, somewhere around 4000 acres treated so far. its a solid platform once you get your mix calibration dialed and understand how the terrain following behaves on uneven ground. the radar system works well but you do have to be careful near tree lines, had a couple weird altitude spikes early on before i figured out the settings.

i havent flown the T50 myself but talked to a distributor rep about it last month. the coaxial design supposedly does improve droplet penetration but i think the bigger practical difference is payload efficiency and flight time per tank. for a service operation where youre doing back to back loads that adds up. if youre buying new today and can stretch the budget the T50 probably makes sense just from a future-proofing standpoint, the T40 is great but its clearly the older architecture now.

the vegetable work is where id be more careful tho, spray timing and droplet size get more critical with specialty crops and you really need to dial in your nozzle setup. not a drone specific thing just something to think about.

the canopy penetration thing is real btw, its not just forum noise. the downwash from coaxial rotors does behave differently and for dense soybean canopy at R3 stage it can actually matter for fungicide efficacy. theres some university extension research on this, i think University of Nebraska had a trial comparing rotor configurations but dont quote me on which one specifically.

that said i'd almost argue the bigger variable is your flight speed and altitude more than which drone you pick. most applicators fly too fast to get good coverage and then blame the equipment.
