ok so i bought a dji mini 2 last week because my brother kept going on about how fun it was and now its sitting on my desk and i kind of dont know what to do first. like do i just take it outside and fly or is there stuff i need to do before that? i updated the firmware i think, the app made me do it before i could do anything. also do i need to register it somewhere? im in the US if that matters. and one more thing ? how do i even get better at flying, is there like a sim or something people use or do you just crash a lot until you figure it out

yes register it with the FAA, its called FAADroneZone, takes like 10 minutes and costs $5. the mini 2 is under 250g so you might think you dont need to but actually you still do for recreational flying, just a different category. dont skip it because the fine if someone catches you is not worth it.

for learning, velvet flight simulator is good but honestly most people just find an empty field and hover for like an hour until it feels natural. the mini 2 is super stable so crashing early on is less likely than you think. just stay in normal mode not sport mode until you really feel comfortable, sport mode is fast and has way less braking distance.

i was exactly where you are like 4 months ago lol. the thing that helped me most was just watching a ton of youtube videos of people doing basic maneuvers and kind of visualizing it before going out. also the dji fly app has a tutorial section i think, or it did when i started. the biggest thing i wish someone told me ? keep it close at first, like way closer than you think you need to. its really disorienting when it gets far away and you lose track of which way its facing
