ok so kind of a dumb question maybe but here goes. i fly recreationally, have a mavic 3 and mostly just do landscape stuff on hikes and stuff around my property. my buddy keeps telling me i should just get the part 107 anyway even though i dont plan to charge anyone for anything. his argument is you get more flexibility with where you can fly and dont have to deal with laanc being as restricted or whatever. is that actually true or is he kind of overselling it

i looked up what the test covers and it seems like a lot of stuff id never really use, airspace charts and weather theory and i dont even know what else. feels like a lot to study for something i dont strictly need. but then again if it actually opens up flying locations that would be worth it to me

your buddy isnt wrong exactly but hes not entirely right either. the recreational rules have gotten a lot better since they rolled out FRIA sites and the trust certification thing, so its not like you're totally locked down without 107. that said, 107 does give you more options ? you can fly in certain controlled airspace without needing to use LAANC at all for some operations, and theres just more flexibility generally if you want to fly somewhere that would otherwise require a waiver or authorization.

whether its worth studying for ? i mean the test isnt that bad, a few weeks of actual focused studying and most people pass. the sectional chart stuff seems intimidating but you get used to it. i did it knowing i wasnt going commercial at the time and im glad i have it

tbh i went through the same thought process and just did it. the study material is actually pretty interesting once you get into it, leared stuff about airspace i had no clue about even after flying recreationally for two years. and yeah having the cert means im not constantly second guessing myself about whether what im doing is technically allowed. peace of mind is worth something i guess
