Complete beginner here - is a $50 toy drone actually a good way to start?

I see conflicting advice everywhere. Some say start with a cheap toy drone to learn, others say go straight to something like a DJI Mini. I'm worried about spending $50 on something that will just frustrate me, but also scared to drop $400+ on my first drone. What's the real story? Did anyone here actually learn successfully on a toy drone first?

For context: I want to eventually do some photography, but I'm also just curious about the flying experience itself.
