so this happened a couple weekends ago and its been bugging me. was visiting family in florida and brought my drone along, flew it over the beach in the morning when nobody was really around. kept it low and close, maybe 200 feet up and stayed away from people. looked it up a little bit beforehand and didnt see anything obvious saying i couldnt. but now im reading stuff online about florida having weird beach-specific rules and some cities banning it outright and im kind of freaking out a little. nothing happened, no one said anything to me, but i keep wondering if i technically broke a law and just didnt get caught. anyone know how this stuff actually works

florida is actually one of the states where theres a preemption law, meaning local governments cant make their own drone ordinances that go beyond state law, which in theory should simplify things. but in practice theres still stuff like national seashores which are federal land and have their own rules, and some beaches are managed by the county or state parks system which adds another layer. honestly if nothing happened and you werent doing anything reckless you're probably fine. the enforcement reality is way different from the rules on paper. that said yeah, checking beforehand with B4UFLY or even just googling the specific beach name plus drone would have saved you the anxiety.

im not a lawyer or anything but i wouldnt lose sleep over it. if you werent near an airport, weren't flying over a crowd, kept it under 400 feet and maintained line of sight you were probably hitting the main FAA recreational requirements. the hyper-local stuff is where it gets murky but enforcement on that is pretty rare unless a ranger or cop specifically came up to you. the more real risk is like, annoying people on the beach and having someone record you and post it somewhere lol. which also didnt happen so
