ok so i bought a Micasense RedEdge a while back and ive been flying it over a client's wheat fields every couple weeks trying to build up some useful data. im processing in Pix4Dfields and the NDVI maps look genuinely interesting ? you can clearly see stress patterns in the low areas near the drainage ditch and theres a weird strip of low vigor in the middle of one field that nobody could explain.

but here's my problem. i can show the farmer a nice colored map and he nods along but when it comes to actually doing something with it ? like variable rate applications or even just scouting those specific zones ? the workflow just kind of falls apart. he doesnt have a VRA-capable sprayer and the agronomist they work with kind of dismissed the whole thing.

is this just a case of the technology being ahead of the adoption or am i missing something about how to make this data actually actionable for a small to mid size operation. feels like im solving half a problem

yeah this is honestly the most common thing i run into doing this kind of work. the data side has gotten really good, processing is way better than it was even 3 years ago, but the farm side infrastructure just isnt there for a huge chunk of operators. VRA applicators are expensive and a lot of agronomists are either skeptical or just dont know how to interpret the outputs in a way that connects to their existing programs.

what ive started doing is just using the maps to target scouting ? like instead of delivering a prescription map i basically say here are the 4 zones you actually need to walk and look at this week. its a much lower barrier and once the farmer starts finding real problems in exactly those spots they start trusting the data more. then eventually the conversation about doing something more sophisticated with it gets easier

the strip of low vigor mid-field thing is interesting, had something similar last summer and it turned out to be a compaction issue from an old field road that got incorporated years ago. ground truth that stuff before you drive yourself crazy trying to explain it remotely. NDVI is great at telling you where to look, not always great at telling you why
