been working on a project where the director wants to experiment with putting a Raptor or some kind of thermal alongside a standard camera capture and i keep coming back to the Inspire 3 as a base. i know its not really designed to carry anything other than the X9 but the airframe is solid and the vibration dampening is way better than the older platforms. wondering if anyone has actually attempted any kind of third party payload integration on one or if its basically locked down.

i know the Inspire 1 days were kind of the wild west with payload hacks and people were doing all kinds of weird stuff with it. seems like DJI has tightened everything up significantly since then. would love to know if theres any payload expansion bracket solutions out there or if this is just a dead end and i should be looking at something like a Freefly Alta or a Gryphon for that kind of work

the Inspire 3 is pretty locked in terms of payload access, at least officially. the accessory port is there but its mostly for following focus stuff and monitoring, not really for hanging additional sensors off it. if you need true multi-payload capability on a cinema-grade platform you really do end up looking at Alta X or one of the Gryphon setups. they cost more and they require a lot more operational overhead but thats kind of the point, theyre actual payload platforms not camera drones.

that said ive seen some rental houses that have done custom bracket work on Inspire platforms for specific jobs but its always been for lightweight stuff like small LiDAR or a second small sensor, not anything heavy. the weight budget just isnt there if you want to keep the X9 on it at the same time

yeah this is sort of the frustrating thing about the Inspire line, its incredible for what its designed to do but DJI clearly doesnt want it to be anything other than a cinema camera drone. which makes sense from their perspective i guess but for guys doing more experimental or survey-adjacent work its a bit of a dead end. i ended up going Alta for a thermal+cinema dual capture job last year and it worked but man the prep time and crew requirements were way more than id budgeted for
