first real fpv build, confused about ESC and motor sizing

ok so ive been flying whoops for about a year and finally decided to build a proper 5 inch freestyle quad. got a iFlight Chimera7 frame sitting on my desk but now im kind of overwhelmed looking at motors and ESCs and i dont really know how to match them properly. like i understand the basics, higher KV = lower voltage generally, but i cant figure out if im going to run 4S or 6S yet and that changes everything apparently.

my budget is pretty tight so im trying not to buy stuff twice. someone on reddit said just get the 2306 2450kv motors and call it a day but that feels like oversimplified advice. also do i need to worry about the ESC amperage rating matching the motor stall current or is that just theoretical and nobody actually hits that in practice? the whole 30x30 vs 20x20 stack thing is also confusing me when looking at the Chimera frame dimensions

the stall current thing is mostly theoretical yeah, in real flight you're not going to hit that unless something goes catastrophically wrong and at that point your ESC is the least of your worries. what actually matters is having some headroom above your motors max continuous draw. if your motors pull say 35A max at full throttle you dont want a 35A ESC, you want a 45 or 50A one just so its not cooking itself constantly.

for 5 inch on a budget, 6S is honestly where its at right now. the efficiency gains are real and you can run lower KV motors which run cooler. something like 2306 or 2407 in the 1750-1950kv range on 6S with a 45A ESC stack is kind of the sweet spot a lot of people land on. the chimera frame takes a 30x30 stack if i remember right so you should have plenty of options there, dont get cornered into a 20x20 setup unless weight is a serious concern which for freestyle it usually isnt.

i went through basically the same thing a few months ago, ended up going 4S first just because i already had batteries from my 3 inch build and honestly it was fine to learn on. upgraded to 6S later and yeah its noticeably punchier but also less forgiving when you mess up a tune. if this is your first 5inch i'd almost say start 4S just so the power curve isn't completely wild while you're still figuring everything out
