so ive been running an Inspire 1 with the X5 for probably 5 years now, mostly corporate stuff and some real estate, occasional short film work when the budget allows. the thing has been a workhorse honestly, battered and dusty and it just keeps flying. but im starting to lose jobs to people showing up with newer kit and clients are definitely asking about 8K and raw more than they used to.

been looking hard at the Inspire 3 and the numbers are obviously way better ? the X9-50S sensor, full frame, ProRes RAW HQ at whatever frame rates ? but the price jump is pretty significant especially when you factor in the Zenmuse X9 on top of the body cost. like were talking 16-17k all in depending on where you buy and whether you need a second controller for dual op.

anyone made this transition or something similar and can give me a real honest take? not looking for spec sheet stuff i can read that myself, just wondering if the actual real world output difference is justifying the spend for people doing the kind of mid tier commercial work i described

made the jump from Inspire 2 to Inspire 3 about eight months ago and yeah the output difference is pretty significant but i want to be honest with you ? a lot of clients genuinely cant tell the difference between well graded X5S footage and what the X9 produces unless theyre sitting in a grade suite with a colorist. where i noticed it most was in dynamic range in tricky lighting, that extra headroom in the highlights is real and it saves shots that wouldve been blown out before.

the bigger thing for me was the obsidian lens lineup and the fact that you get actual cinema glass options now. if youre doing any narrative adjacent work that matters a lot more than the resolution bump imo. the 35mm T2.0 wide open has a character the Zenmuse lenses before it just didnt have.

dual operator setup is where it gets expensive fast though, second RC Pro adds up and you really want a dedicated camera op for anything serious. if youre a solo operator a lot of the capability is kind of wasted unless you lock off and fly simple paths

this might be a bit off topic but have you looked at the used Inspire 2 market before committing to the 3? prices have dropped a lot since the 3 came out and the X7 sensor is genuinely excellent, DNG raw, 6K, apple prores ? its still a very capable camera for most commercial work and you could probably get a solid used rig for less than half what the Inspire 3 body alone costs. just something to consider if the budget is the main hesitation
