so this is a bit of a weird use case but im working on an agricultural survey project and the client wants multispectral data, think NDVI crop health stuff. we have a Micasense RedEdge-MX lying around from a previous project that was run on a different platform and someone had the idea that we could just adapt it to hang off the Inspire 2 somehow since we already own the Inspire 2 and dont want to rent another platform.

the RedEdge is not that heavy, maybe 150 grams ish, and the Inspire 2 can obviously carry a lot more than that. the issue is the mounting and also whether triggering via PWM or the camera port would even work. ive seen some people talk about using the accessory port on the I2 but i cant find any solid documentation on what signals are actually available there and DJI's developer docs are kind of a maze.

anyone done anything like this or know someone who has? or is this just going to be a mess and i should tell the client we need to use the right tool for the job

we did something similar a while back, not a RedEdge but a Sequoia, and honestly the mounting was the easy part ? just fabbed a simple dovetail plate that bolted to the expansion bay where the Zenmuse normally sits. the problem we ran into was vibration isolation, the Inspire 2's gimbal dampening is tuned for the Zenmuse cameras obviously and when you stick a rigid mounted sensor on there you get a lot of jello in the imagery especially in any kind of wind. ended up having to add our own silicone dampers which helped but wasnt perfect.

triggering we just used a cheap PWM to USB adapter and set the sensor to interval shooting mode, worked fine for what we needed. never managed to get the accessory port to do anything useful tbh, gave up on that after a day of fiddling

i mean technically it'll work but if this is a paid agricultural survey job you really want to think hard about whether the Inspire 2 is the right airframe for it. multispectral survey work usually means flying long grid patterns at consistent altitude, probably 20-30 min flight times minimum, and the I2 battery endurance isnt great for that kind of work especially if theres any wind. the Matrice 300 or even the older M210 would be a much better fit operationally. the payload thing can be solved but the mission profile is where it gets annoying
