DIY Track Gates - PVC vs Fiberglass Poles for Club Racing

  • Members

Building gates from 20 feet of 1/2 inch Schedule 30 PVC costs around $10 per gate, using thin-walled pipe from hardware stores plus 90-degree elbows and 4-way branches. Question: Has anyone compared durability between PVC and fiberglass telescopic poles for regular club use?

PVC gates stand straight in wind and take minor hits without falling, breaking apart safely at joints when really hit. MultiGP suggests PVC for lightweight yet durable standard gates. But our club runs 3x weekly sessions - wondering if fiberglass holds up better long-term?

Pool noodles make gates more visible and absorb impact, potentially saving props.

Championship-caliber races use larger 7x6 foot openings for better racing and less crashing at high speeds. For club racing, PVC works fine but fiberglass telescopic poles are worth the extra cost - they don't shatter like PVC can in cold weather.

We've been using PVC gates for 8 months now and they're holding up great. They set up and break down in seconds, clearly visible in FPV, and do the job nicely after extensive training. Haven't needed to replace any yet despite regular crashes.

DIY approaches using inexpensive hardware store materials not only save costs but enrich the learning experience through hands-on design and engineering. Started with PVC, definitely going fiberglass next - the weight difference is noticeable when setting up courses.
