switching from X7 to X9 on inspire 3 ? worth it for narrative work?

so ive been running an inspire 2 with the X7 for a couple years now, mostly doing commercial stuff and some doc work, and ive been seriously considering making the jump to the inspire 3 with the X9-8K Air. the thing is the cost difference is pretty brutal and i cant figure out if the actual image quality jump justifies it for the kind of work i do.

the X7 has been rock solid for me honestly, super sharp, the color science is decent once you grade it, and clients have never complained. but ive started losing bids to people who are marketing the inspire 3 setup and i think some of it is just the spec sheet conversation in pre-production meetings. like the 8K thing matters even when the deliverable is 4K because clients feel safer somehow.

anyone actually done a proper a/b between the two rigs in real production conditions? not lab tests, like actual outdoor shoots with varying light situations. curious especially about the dynamic range difference in practice and whether the wider color gamut is noticeable after a proper grade.

yeah the X9 is a noticeable step up but maybe not in the way you'd expect. the thing that got me wasnt really the resolution, its the way it handles highlights. shot a sunrise sequence over some coastal cliffs last spring and the X7 would have blown out the sky pretty bad at that angle ? the X9 just held it together way better. dynamic range in real conditions is genuinely better not just on paper.

that said your point about the spec sheet thing is completely real and kind of annoying. half the reason people are spec-bumping to inspire 3 is the pitch meeting not the actual deliverable. if your X7 footage is already landing you work the jump might not pay off fast enough to matter. depends on your day rate and how many shoots you'd need to break even on the body cost difference.

dont sleep on the dual operator workflow improvements on the i3 either. the latency on the transmission system is just cleaner which sounds like a small thing until youre doing fast panning work and the camera op is trying to compensate in real time. had a situation on inspire 2 where the combo of gimbal lag and transmission delay was just slightly off enough to cause issues on a tracking shot. havent had that problem since switching.
