switching from dji goggles to analog ? what am i actually losing here

  • Members

ok so ive been flying dji fpv system for about a year and a half and honestly its been great but im thinking about getting into more freestyle and building my own quads and the whole ecosystem just feels limiting. a buddy of mine keeps telling me to just go analog and not look back but i genuinely dont know what im signing up for here.

like i understand the latency on dji is lower and the image quality is obviously way better but for actual flying ? not cinematic stuff, just ripping around trees and doing tricks ? does it really matter that much? im looking at the fat shark dominator hdos2 or maybe the skyzone cobra x but honestly i dont even know if those are still considered good or if theres something better now.

also the vtx side of things confuses me a little. i know ill need a decent 5.8ghz transmitter but theres so many options and everyone has a different opinion on what to run. currently thinking the rush tank solo or one of the tbs ones but open to suggestions. and do i need to care that much about antenna selection at this point or is that more of a later problem once i actually know what im doing

honestly the latency argument for dji is kind of overblown for freestyle imo. yeah its technically lower in terms of raw numbers but when youre ripping through a gap your brain isnt processing frame latency the same way. ive flown both extensively and once you tune into analog you kind of stop thinking about it.

the hdos2 are solid goggles, no complaints there, but if budget isnt a huge concern the skyzone 04x with the oled screen is worth a look ? the blacks are actually black which sounds dumb but matters more than you'd think at dusk or in shadowy areas. for vtx the rush tank solo is a reliable pick, runs cool, output is consistent. id just make sure whatever you get is running the right power for where you fly because thats actually where people get into trouble with legality.

antennas ? dont sleep on this, seriously. a trash antenna will tank your range and image quality way before your vtx power matters. lhcp vs rhcp consistency between your vtx antenna and goggle patches is the thing people mess up most. start with a couple of rushblade or foxeer lollipops and youll be fine for park flying.

i made the same switch like 8 months ago coming from digital and tbh the thing nobody told me was how much i'd actually enjoy tinkering with the build side once i wasnt locked into a proprietary system. analog just feels more open if that makes sense.

the image takes like two sessions to get used to and then you kind of forget it ever looked different lol
