building out a small 3inch for some backyard and light park flying, nothing crazy. i originally grabbed one of those cheap aluminum frames off aliexpress mostly because the price was stupid low and i figured id just learn on it. its actually held up okay but the thing weighs a ton relatively speaking and im pretty sure its eating into my flight times more than it should be.

looking at some of the diatone and flywoo carbon options in the 3inch range and the weight difference is pretty significant on paper. my question is whether the rigidity difference actually matters at this scale or if im just going to spend 40 bucks and notice basically nothing in the air. i dont race or anything, mainly just cruising around and learning some basic freestyle moves. motor mounts seem to be the main failure point on my aluminum one and i havent cracked anything yet but i can see its already a little bent on one arm from a tree.

carbon is worth it, even at 3inch. the weight savings on a small build have a bigger proportional impact than on a 5inch because youre working with less total thrust to begin with. something like the flywoo explorer or even a generic toothpick frame in 3inch will fly noticeably snappier and your motors run cooler because theyre not lugging extra mass around. the aluminum frames are fine for literally banging against things but theyre not great for actual flight feel.

honestly for backyard cruising you probably wont feel a massive differnce in terms of flying style but carbon does dampen vibrations way better which your fc and gyro will appreciate. cleaner gyro data means your PIDs actually work like theyre supposed to instead of fighting noise the whole time. the bent arm thing would get me though, aluminum bends and stays bent which throws your motor angles off and then your tune is fighting that too. id switch just for that reason alone
