video getting worse the further i get, vtx power setting question

  • Members

so anyway ive been chasing this issue for a while and cant figure out if its the vtx power settings or maybe just my antenna placement on the quad. running a rush tank solo at 400mw, goggles are skyzone 04l with two lollipop antennas both omni. past like 300 meters or so the image starts breaking up bad, mostly static and then just cuts. which seems way too close for 400mw honestly.

i tried switching to 800mw and it helped a little but the vtx gets real hot and i dont want to burn it up. somebody mentioned something about antenna polarization matching but i dont fully understand what that means in practice. also my vtx is kind of crammed under the camera plate on my 5inch, dunno if that matters

the placement thing is almost definitely part of your problem. if the vtx antenna is horizontal and close to carbon fiber framing you're losing a ton of signal right there, carbon absorbs RF pretty well and the radiation pattern on those small omni antennas is already not great if they're not oriented vertically. ideally the antenna should be sticking up away from the frame with a clear line of sight in the direction youre flying.

polarization matching ? basically your vtx antenna and your goggle antennas should be the same, so if youre running RHCP lollipops on the goggles make sure your vtx antenna is also RHCP. mixing left and right hand circular polarization kills your signal way harder than youd expect, like massive db loss. worth double checking the label on your vtx antenna, a lot of the stock ones that come with vtxs are just linear which doesnt match circular polarized goggle antennas well at all.

300m breakup with 400mw does sound off but ive also seen sketchy results from rush solo units when the solder joints on the u.fl connector get cold or a little loose. give that connector a look if you can, mine had the same issue and reflowing it fixed everything. probably not the only cause but worth checking before you go swapping antennas around
