first real 5" build - confused about ESC and motor combo

  • Members

ok so ive been flying whoops for like a year and finally decided to pull the trigger on a proper 5 inch freestyle build. ive got a rough parts list together but im second guessing the motor and ESC pairing and honestly theres so much conflicting info out there i dont even know where to start anymore.

right now im looking at T-Motor Velox V2306.5 1750kv motors with a 4in1 45A ESC, running 6S. the math seems fine based on what ive read but a few guys in my local group said to just go 50A to have headroom. is that actually worth the extra weight or is 45A totally fine for a mid-aggressive freestyle build? im not racing, mostly just parks and open fields, nothing insane.

also should i bother with bidirectional DSHOT at this point or is that just adding complexity for a first build? seen a lot of people say RPM filtering changed their life and others say its overhyped. frame is going to be a Apex HD 5" if that matters.

45A on 6S for freestyle is completely fine unless youre doing like full throttle gate racing style stuff constantly. the headroom argument is real but for a first 5 inch build youre not going to be pushing those ESCs anywhere near their limits most of the time anyway. the Velox motors are solid, used the 2207 version myself for a while and they handle heat well.

on the bidirectional DSHOT question - just do it. seriously its not that complicated to set up in betaflight anymore and RPM filtering genuinely does make a noticeable difference in how the quad feels especially at mid throttle. it cleaned up a bunch of propwash on my last build that i was fighting with for weeks. just make sure your ESC firmware supports it, most BLHeli_32 stuff does, 4-in-1s can be a bit more hit or miss so worth checking before you buy.

i went through basically the same thing when i built my first 5 inch lol. ended up going with a 50A just because i was paranoid and honestly i think it made zero difference. the weight is like 3-4 grams more maybe? probably not something youll ever notice flying freestyle.

dont have experience with that specific Apex frame but ive heard good things. make sure you plan your stack height before you order everything, that part got me and i had to reorder some longer standoffs which was annoying.
