DJI's new regs compliance thing ? anyone actually read through it?

  • Members

so i was going through the DJI newsroom the other day and saw they posted something about their remote ID compliance updates and honestly i got about halfway through before my eyes glazed over. i fly mostly recreationally, sub 250g stuff, but im starting to wonder if i need to care more about this than i do currently.

from what i gathered theyre pushing some kind of firmware update that ties into the broadcast remote ID requirement but i cant tell if this is already live or still rolling out. and does it apply differently depending on whether youre flying in the US vs europe? i have a friend who flies in germany and he was saying the EU stuff is totally different timeline.

anyway if anyone has actually dug into this and can explain it like im not a lawyer id appreciate it. or if theres a good summary somewhere that isnt just the FAA website which is somehow both too detailed and not detailed enough at the same time

yeah the remote ID stuff is genuinely confusing and i think DJI has been rolling out the firmware updates in batches rather than all at once. if you're on a Mini 3 or newer you're probably already covered since those broadcast RID out of the box, but older birds need the update and in some cases a separate module depending on the model.

the EU situation is a whole different beast ? they've got their own class marking system and the timelines have slipped a couple times already. your friend in germany is probably fine flying under the transitional rules for a while yet but i wouldnt quote me on the exact dates.

for a plain english breakdown i actually found the 51drones youtube channel pretty helpful, he did a video a few months back that walked through it without all the legalese. not sure if its still fully current but the core info was solid

omg i had the same reaction reading that page lol. i ended up just calling my local FRIA field coordinator and he basically said for recreational under 250g most of us are fine for now and to just make sure the app is updated. take that with a grain of salt tho bc he also wasnt 100% sure about the module requirement for my Mavic Air 2
